self-motivation

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF?

Motivation is an important skill. It is the deepest factor determining people's spirit and behavior.

When looking at the image above, you may immediately think of the iceberg principle; the iceberg in the image is divided into a visible portion and a submerged portion.

The visible portion includes: Knowledge and Skills.

The submerged portion includes: Social Role, Self-image, Traits, and Motives.

All the layers shown in the image exist within every person. However, the visible portion of the iceberg is expressed externally and can be seen by others.

What about the hidden, submerged parts? Many people are unaware of the factors in the submerged portion of the iceberg because no one can see them, and they cannot see them in themselves either. People with high self-awareness understand themselves. Others may use assessment and measurement methods to gain an accurate understanding of themselves and discover their potential.

You can see that the Motives factor lies at the bottom of the iceberg. It is the deepest factor within a person. Motivation is the source that drives people to take action, which is then expressed through the visible aspects of skills and knowledge.

Let's explore Motives and understand how important self-motivation is for each person.

1. What is motivation?

Motivation is the factor that creates mental energy—the underlying reason behind human behavior.

Motivation is a core value that drives effectiveness at work. It encourages us to work every day and motivates us to increase our efforts to complete our tasks.

2. How is motivation related to the visible factors of the iceberg?

Skills and knowledge are things that can be learned and developed.

What happens if we have knowledge and skills but do not want to use them, or if we lack the motivation to perform work related to those skills and that knowledge? This is a complete waste.

And what happens if we lack skills or knowledge but have no intention or motivation to learn and develop? This will lead to a serious deficiency.

The problems caused by a lack of motivation include:

  • A failure to innovate or develop oneself to meet real-world needs.
  • Avoiding difficult problems in both work and life.
  • Conflict within one's intrinsic motivation. Personal needs will remain unmet because there are no practical actions to satisfy them.
  • A lack of motivation causes people to lose their vitality and run out of ideas for taking action.
  • Insufficient perseverance to complete tasks, making it especially easy to give up when difficult problems arise.
  • Difficulty recovering after each failure.

3. How important is self-motivation?

Motivation comes from two directions: external motivation and internal motivation. In this article, we focus on motivation generated from within each person.

Developing the ability to sustain long-term self-motivation will affect every aspect of your life. This skill helps you achieve professional success while also bringing you a much greater sense of happiness and peace. A higher level of self-motivation helps you:

– Overcome the feeling of being “stuck” in taking action;

– Recover from failure more quickly and easily;

– Stay on the right path even when you feel like giving up;

– Motivate the people around you by setting an example and sharing motivational skills with others.

4. How to motivate yourself

Some people are able to motivate themselves. They may have developed or unconsciously learned this ability from an early age. We can all improve this skill in the present. Set clear goals and actions for yourself to carry out.

4.1. Understanding your own motivation

To understand what motivates you at present, you must first know what your needs are right now.

According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, everyone has:

– External needs: originate from external things and other people—in general, from the world around us. They include safety needs and social needs.

– Intrinsic needs: come from within each person. They include the need for respect and the need for self-affirmation. Motivation arising from intrinsic needs is often extremely powerful and less influenced by immediate benefits.

Identify which needs are most urgent so you can focus on addressing them. At the same time, make long-term plans for the issues that matter to you and that you will address in the future.

4.2. Exercises to develop daily self-motivation skills

Do not focus only on the final destination you want to reach before you begin. Start each day with small steps toward improvement. Taking one step at a time, day by day, is the beginning of your journey toward self-motivation.

Step 1: Gratitude

Think about the things in life, or in the day you have just experienced, for which you feel grateful.

  • Be grateful for the people who give you perseverance and encourage you to continue living and working.
  • Be grateful for gifts and for situations that help you understand life more deeply.
  • Be grateful to yourself for continually adapting, learning, and innovating.
  • Be grateful for challenges and difficulties because they create opportunities for you to grow and evolve.
Step 2: Enjoy the good things

When we appreciate everything around us, we see that every object and event is beautiful. Enjoy them and immerse yourself in them so that you can feel as comfortable as possible.

Step 3: Social mission

Think about what your life and the lives of those around you will be like when you accomplish your goals. How will completing the work improve your team? Conflicts will decrease, and everyone will have more time and opportunities to improve their work and themselves.

Step 4: Personal goals

Look back at your personal goals.

  • How have you developed, and what have you learned?
  • Think about the person you want to become in the future, and how you will feel at that point.
  • Estimate the path you will need to take, including how far and how long it will be.
  • The first step toward clear awareness will minimize anxiety when the results are not yet visible.
  • Accept the fact that you will encounter many difficulties and challenges. However, you must accept them as part of the journey toward your goal.
Step 5: Awareness:

Do not let yourself become overly absorbed in your thoughts. Let us take action while also paying attention to and remaining aware of the process, as well as the motivations and needs involved in achieving that goal.

5. Some Tools to Support Motivation Improvement and Personal Development

5.1. Motivation Questionnaire (MQ) – A Motivation Questionnaire from Germany.

Assessment results MQ Test based on Maslow’s needs. These are among the basic needs of human beings. The MQ Test helps uncover individual motivations through a motivation questionnaire. It measures both employees’ needs and their level of satisfaction with the most basic and common needs.

The MQ Test measures whether employees’ psychological tendencies and motivations are driven by external factors (extrinsic) or internal factors (intrinsic). The measurement results provide a basis for understanding what employees need. This, in turn, helps create motivation for them to work effectively and generate greater value for the business.

5.2. Uchida-Kraepelin (UK Test) from Japan.

Uchida-Kraepelin (UK Test) is a test that analyzes human resources quickly and accurately. The results reflect work ability, measure job performance, identify behavioral tendencies and habits, and highlight notable psychological fluctuations.

The UK Test provides businesses with information for measuring capability, suitability for a profession, and compatibility with the characteristics of a job. It is used in recruitment, position allocation, and the assignment of job types and workloads to employees.

5.3. Trait-Map – Germany’s Human Personality Trend Test.

Trait-Map Test based on the Big Five model, helps identify participants' personalities, personality types, life perspectives, and working styles.

The Trait-map test results provide details such as personality expressions in essential skills, stress tolerance, meticulousness, attention to detail, and conscientiousness…

The Trait-Map Test is particularly effective for team assessment. Managers can identify which personality traits are dominant and which are less evident in each person. They can also recognize each individual’s most prominent role within the team. Identifying the roles and positions that each person is capable of taking on within the team is also possible. This enables businesses to arrange personnel appropriately to maximize work effectiveness, while providing timely support and training where limitations remain and improvement is needed.
