Applying the DISC model at work

The DISC model and its application in the workplace

To build a sustainable workforce, businesses often use tools to support employee assessment. As a result, personality and competency reports frequently appear in recruitment and employee training. One report that is currently familiar to many businesses is the DISC model.

1. What is the DISC model?

The DISC personality model was developed through research by psychologist William Moulton Marston. It is an application that can analyze and assess human personality relatively quickly and accurately. The model provides a high level of insight into a person's personality and behavioral tendencies. Based on these assessments, we can understand others and choose appropriate communication methods to achieve better results at work and in life.

The DISC model is analyzed according to four main groups:

D (Dominance – the “Dominance” personality type : People in this group are generally decisive, strong, and confident. They tend to enjoy competition, have strong focus, and are energetic and assertive. People with a dominant personality are more concerned with results than with the process.

I (Influence) the “Influence” personality type : This group includes sociable and outgoing people. They are also consistently inspired to create and influence others. These individuals possess exceptionally strong creative energy.

S (Steadiness) the “Steadiness” personality type : This group consists of people who prefer stability and are calm and gentle. They are careful and dedicated in even the smallest tasks. They are also good listeners and tend to be highly empathetic.

C (Compliance) the “Compliance” personality type : The most prominent characteristic of people in group C is their sense of responsibility. They are meticulous and careful about every detail of their work.

The DISC model helps us understand our own personalities and work more effectively with others. Each personality group has its own characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. Most importantly, we need to understand these strengths and weaknesses so that we can build on our strengths and improve our weaknesses.

2. Applications of the DISC model

Because it provides in-depth analysis of human personality, the DISC report has broad applications in life and work.

2.1 In the family

Parents can easily understand their children and choose appropriate ways to communicate and interact with them. They can also become their children's companions without creating barriers or pressure. In addition, when parents identify a child's dominant personality traits, they can more easily provide appropriate educational guidance.

2.2 In Everyday Life

Relationships improve when people understand and empathize with one another. At the same time, adjustment and change to achieve greater compatibility become possible.

2.3 In business

Using the DISC personality model in recruitment or training helps businesses screen for suitable employees and make appropriate transfers. Even selecting successors for key positions will no longer be based solely on intuition.

DISC helps teams understand and support one another, resolve inherent conflicts, and minimize disagreements in the future.

3. How to make the most of DISC report results

When applied to its full potential, the DISC personality model can deliver exceptionally significant results.

Alongside a DISC report, a 360-degree assessment provides objective results and extensive data. The report can be completed during interviews or throughout the work process.

The report also provides a basis for making employee transfers easier and assigning positions that suit each personality group.

Assessments should be conducted periodically—monthly, quarterly, or annually. A structured assessment process helps employees feel valued and willing to contribute. At the same time, the company can understand the state of its workforce, determine whether it is aligned with the corporate culture, and identify what needs to be adjusted.

4. Other reports for reference

Besides the DISC personality model, which is widely used in the market, other psychological reports are also quite common, including:

4.1. The Uchida-Kraepelin psychological test from Japan

Uchida-Kraepelin (UK Test) is a test that analyzes human resources quickly and accurately. The results reflect work ability, measure job performance, identify behavioral tendencies and habits, and highlight notable psychological fluctuations.

The UK Test provides businesses with information for measuring competencies and determining suitability for a profession and the characteristics of a job. It is used in recruitment, position allocation, work classification, and assigning workloads to employees.

4.2. The Trait-map personality test from Germany

Trait-map report based on the Big Five model, helps identify participants' personalities, personality types, life perspectives, and working styles.

The Trait-map test results provide details such as personality expressions in essential skills, stress tolerance, meticulousness, attention to detail, and conscientiousness…

The Trait-map report is particularly effective for team assessment. Managers can identify which personality traits are most prominent and which are less evident in each individual. They can also recognize each person's most prominent role within the team. Identifying which roles and positions an individual may be suited to take on within a team is also possible. This enables businesses to arrange their workforce appropriately to maximize performance, while providing timely support and training where limitations remain and improvement is needed.

4.3. The MBTI personality test

The MBTI personality test (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) is designed to help people understand themselves and analyze human personality by answering a series of personality-related questions. MBTI divides human personality into 16 main personality types; each type has a different perspective on life and a different approach to solving problems. It is considered one of the most widely used tests in career counseling for students before they choose a field of study or career.
