Employee capability assessments are used during recruitment, throughout employment, and when considering transfers or promotions. Based on the results, we can develop a development plan suited to the growth of both the company and the individual.
I. Objectives of employee capability assessment
Employee assessment methods serve two purposes: they help organizations determine the value and productivity employees contribute, while also helping employees develop in their own roles.
1. For organizations:
Employee assessments can make a difference in an organization’s operations.
- Identify where management can improve working conditions. The goal is to increase productivity and work quality.
- Address behavioral issues before they affect departmental productivity.
- Encourage employees to contribute more by recognizing their talents and skills
- Support employees in developing their skills and careers
- Improve strategic decision-making in situations involving dismissals, succession planning, or filling open internal roles.
2. Benefits for employees
Insights gained from evaluating and discussing employee performance can help:
- Recognize and acknowledge an employee’s achievements and contributions.
- Identify opportunities for promotion or bonuses.
- Identify and support training or further education needs for continued career development.
- Identify specific areas where skills can be improved.
- Motivate employees and help them feel involved in and invested in their career development.
- Discuss employees’ long-term goals openly.
II. Highly effective employee capability assessment methods
1. Management by Objectives (MBO)
This method is applied when managers and employees participate in generating ideas, planning, developing projects, and communicating the goals to be achieved within a specific period. After a detailed plan is established, managers and subordinates hold regular meetings to discuss project progress and jointly debate the project’s feasibility.
Advantages:
This assessment method helps identify organizational and individual objectives and evaluate the feasibility and suitability of a project.
To achieve the best results from MBO, the process must be integrated with the organization-wide performance evaluation and goal-setting processes. By combining MBO with these processes, businesses can improve employee commitment, increase the likelihood of achieving goals, and allow employees to think about the future.
2. 360-degree feedback
360-degree feedback is a multidimensional performance assessment method. It uses feedback collected from the employee’s circle of influence, including managers, colleagues, customers, and direct reports, through measurement tests such as the UK psychological test, and the Trait-map workplace personality assessment. This method not only eliminates bias in performance evaluations but also provides a clear understanding of an individual’s capabilities.
This employee assessment method has five inseparable components:
- Self-assessment
- Manager assessment
- Peer assessment
- Senior Manager Assessment (SAM)
- Customer or client assessment
Advantages:
- Increase individuals’ awareness of how they perform and the impact of their performance on other stakeholders
- Serve as a key to initiating coaching, consulting, and career development activities
- Encourage employees to invest in self-development and implement change management
- Integrate performance feedback into the workplace culture and promote engagement
3. Assessment Center method
The Assessment Center method helps employees gain a clear picture of how others perceive them and understand the impact this has on their performance. In addition, this method can use the Uchida-Kreapelin work performance measurement test or the Trait-map workplace personality assessment; Work motivation in the workplace MQ.
During the assessment process, employees are asked to participate in simulated social exercises, such as informal discussions, fact-finding exercises, decision-making tasks, role-playing, and other activities designed to ensure success in a role. The main limitation of this method is that the process is time-consuming and costly to manage.
Advantages:
- Enhance participants’ knowledge, stimulate their thinking process, and improve employee effectiveness
- Can be adapted to suit different roles, capabilities, and business needs
- Provides insight into employees’ personality traits (ethics, tolerance, problem-solving skills, introversion / extroversion, adaptability, etc.)
4. Psychological Assessment Method
Psychological assessment methods are highly useful for identifying employees’ latent potential because they focus on analyzing an employee’s future performance rather than their past work. These assessments are used to analyze seven key components of employee performance, including interpersonal communication skills; cognitive ability; intellectual traits; leadership skills; personality traits; emotional intelligence; and other relevant skills.
To identify employees’ latent potential, psychologists recommend applying psychological assessment methods.
Qualified psychologists conduct various tests (in-depth interviews, psychological tests, discussions, etc.) to evaluate an employee’s performance. However, this is a relatively slow and complex process; the quality of the results depends heavily on the psychologist conducting it.
Advantages:
- Extracts objective, measurable data not only about employee performance but also about potential.
- Can be implemented easily compared with other performance assessment methods.
- Provides introverted or shy employees with a platform to shine and demonstrate their potential.
5. Human Resource Accounting Method (Cost)
The human resource accounting method (cost) analyzes an employee’s performance through the monetary benefits they bring to the company. This is determined by comparing the cost of retaining an employee (the cost to the company) with the monetary benefits (contribution) that an organization has identified from that particular employee.
When employee performance is assessed using cost accounting methods, factors such as average service value per unit; quality; overhead costs; interpersonal relationships; and more are taken into account. Heavy reliance on cost-benefit analysis and the evaluator’s memory is a disadvantage of the human resource accounting method.
Advantages:
- Measures cost-effectiveness and the value an employee brings to the organization.
- Helps identify the financial impact employee performance has on the organization’s bottom line.
6. Self-Assessment
The employee self-assessment method allows employees to identify ways to improve performance that are meaningful to them. Although highly subjective, it provides fuel for a more detailed discussion.
Recording where employees rate their work highly or poorly can help mentors better meet them where they are and personalize their development path.
Depending on the nature of each business, different methods may be used in the employee assessment process. However, what follows the assessment is equally important for it to be effective: training and supporting employees in developing their capabilities and advancing their careers.
III. Training Methods Following Employee Competency Assessment
Depending on the company’s budget and size, different training methods may be applied.
However, these training methods must address employees’ weaknesses; clearly encourage their development; suit the capabilities and learning capacity of each individual/organization; and focus on the key factors needed for success at work.
At the same time, periodic reassessment is essential and important because it can measure the results of the training process, whether it is on the right track, whether the training path is appropriate, whether personnel promotion and transfers have been timed correctly, and more…

When employee competency assessment is conducted correctly, fully, and consistently, the results can be highly practical and significant. It helps businesses improve individual and team capabilities; create conditions for employee development; demonstrate the company’s care; identify a successor team; and strengthen employee engagement with the company.
