Emotional stability is one of the five major factors in the Big Five model of individual personality.
When a workload is assigned, I believe you will complete it. But do you choose to finish it calmly and steadily, taking one step at a time? Or do you rush while switching between tasks? As a result, you may complete the work exhausted. Workplace relationships may have changed because of the tension you bring and the way you pressure others to finish tasks quickly.
Have you ever heard your manager say things like:
- “When you see me getting angry, you have to stop me!”
- “Sometimes losing my temper makes me make the wrong decisions!”
- “Please understand that I have a hot temper, so sometimes I say too much!”
Should we continue responding to employees with such emotional instability? Or should we accept working with managers who cannot control their emotions and express them through uncontrolled words or actions?
In practice, many people may experience conflict during the work process but still achieve good results. Others may not express conflict yet still finish with low-quality work; afterward, their relationships are no longer as connected and harmonious as they were at the beginning.
Is openly expressing emotions and attitudes clearly good or bad?
You need to assess your emotional stability and make appropriate changes for your current work, environment, and colleagues, or choose a job or workplace that suits your tendencies.
1. How Can Emotional Stability Be Managed?
As shown above, emotional stability is one of the five factors in the Big Five model. It is subdivided into five individual personality traits related to this factor.

So how can these traits be applied to measure and assess emotional stability?
You can rate yourself on those five sub-traits. This score is based on self-awareness. It may or may not align with how outsiders perceive the way you present yourself. Multidimensional assessments from your manager, colleagues, subordinates, friends, and others are therefore needed to validate your score.
2. Example of “Calmness”

As shown in the result for “Calmness” above, a score of 8 is toward the right, and a right-leaning tendency is expressed as follows: “Calm and able to work under pressure”. What are the strengths and weaknesses of a person with these characteristics in relation to the nature of the job and the work environment?
A manager with a high level of calmness who can withstand pressure will manage their emotions well. They are less likely to put pressure on their subordinates and can calmly develop solutions or processes for handling work. This creates a smooth chain of handling matters from senior to junior levels. By contrast, a manager with a low level of calmness who constantly feels pressured becomes a burden to themselves and their employees.
Pressure is not always negative. It can result from setting higher standards for the quality of work. Calmness, however, is how people respond to that pressure. People with high emotional intelligence can manage both their negative and positive emotions.
3. Example of “Confidence”

According to the results shown in this image, a person has a confidence score of 1. Therefore, they tend to display the following left-leaning characteristics: “Confidence decreases in certain social or unfamiliar situations”. Is this person suited to customer prospecting or developing new relationships? What kind of work environment and job characteristics would suit them? Or should they consider improving their level of confidence?
Confidence is often influenced by personal psychology and formed over a long process of living and working. You can draw on your knowledge and skills to increase your confidence. As you know, knowledge and skills can be learned. Therefore, improving confidence to meet work demands and enjoy life is something that deserves attention and development.
You can assess other similar factors to measure yourself. Identify solutions to adjust and improve yourself every day.
