Recently, Facebook has been filled with posts about the frightening side of perfectionism. The image representing this article is a photo of the singer Hà Anh Tuấn, inspired by a memorable statement of his: “Don't try to be perfectly rounded or live a completely fulfilled life… Even an apple has to be imperfect in order to be valuable.”
Of course, from one perspective, this statement is very… beautiful. It resonates with many people. It comforts those who are still working tirelessly out there but have not yet achieved the results they hoped for.
But wait! Let's take another look. Is the bitten apple being discussed here Apple? And if it is Apple, I don't think the brand is valuable because it is imperfect, do you? The missing bite represents an endless desire for knowledge and a continuous ambition to innovate. It is precisely because of Apple's efforts that its products lead the smartphone market. The company continually improves its products, making them better every day. I am not an iFan. But I must admit that Apple's products give users wonderful experiences despite their extremely simple design. I want to share another perspective on these “frightening people.”
This product is also very much like those who pursue perfectionism. In a certain sense, they are always striving to become better every day. They always want everything to be truly excellent. And what would happen if the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and so on were merely carelessly made products released onto the market? Would that bitten apple have any value then? Therefore, the bitten-apple logo has value because of the collective efforts of Apple to bring users increasingly refined products that move toward perfection. Like people who pursue perfectionism, it is not perfect right now. It is still full of flaws. But it refuses to let tomorrow have exactly the same flaws as yesterday. That is why it has value. Look at other aspects of life. Would you want to eat at a restaurant where the food is cooked carelessly and sloppily dumped onto the plate? Would you want to use a product with several misshapen buttons? Would you want to use a fan with only two of its three blades? We want to use perfect products. Those products must come from people who are always striving for perfection.
At work, would you want to work with someone who repeats the same mistake again and again? Or would you prefer a receptive colleague who strives to improve every day? What would happen to your company if things remained incorrect but nothing changed over the years?
You may feel exhausted when you are around someone who strives for perfection. But thank them. Without people like that in the world, you would never have the opportunity to use wonderful products like those made by Apple!
What matters is knowing where your imperfections lie so that you can work to fill those gaps. Do not think that because you are imperfect, you should simply stop there. Be like Apple, always seeking to innovate and improve every day. Stay hungry, stay foolish!
